From the Rector

Dear All Saints:

The Episcopal Diocese of Ohio began a search process for a new bishop last fall upon the retirement announcement of the current bishop, the Rt. Rev. Mark Hollingsworth. Today, the search committee is announcing a slate of three candidates to be the 12th bishop of the diocese, and I am one of those candidates.

I have spent these past months in deep prayer and discernment about this, seeking guidance from my spiritual director and a couple of trusted colleagues and friends. While I recognize that it looks like I am trying to leave All Saints to go somewhere else, the best way for me to describe it is in the context of ordination, more about obeying God’s invitation than searching for a job. A bishop is ordained to a new order of ministry, just as when a deacon or priest is ordained. It is a holy calling, as is any calling to lay or ordained ministry.

Of course, all of this is dependent on the outcome of the election. There are two other candidates on the slate, both of them wonderful and faithful women. There will be a petition process over the next few weeks for someone to be nominated to the slate in addition to the three of us. In October, we all travel to Ohio for a series of meet-and-greets with people throughout the diocese, and the electing convention is November 18-19.

So, what does all of this mean for All Saints? For now, we carry on as we are, making plans to launch a new program year in September, continuing to build our Sunday School program, and to look forward to renewed fellowship and service opportunities. If I am not elected in November, I will continue to serve you as faithfully as I have tried to do for the past 4 ½ years.

You may read more about the process and the candidates here.

I am happy to respond to any questions or comments you may have. As this process continues, I ask your prayers for me, for the other candidates, for this community, and for the Diocese of Ohio.

Know that you all remain in my love and prayers.
